Special Guest Dinner with Tony Wheeler, Co-Founder of Lonely Planet

X1nuw5jvluzbtfqykpzy

Described by the New York Times as ‘the trailblazing patron saint of the world’s backpackers and adventure travellers,’ Tony Wheeler is a publishing entrepreneur, businessman, travel writer, and co-founder of the Lonely Planet guidebook empire with his wife, Maureen Wheeler.

Tony and Maureen arrived in Sydney in 1972 after a six-month Asia overland trip from Europe with just 27 cents left between them. In late 1973 they started Lonely Planet Publications to publish Across Asia on the Cheap, the story of their trip from London to Australia. From this early guidebook, Tony grew Lonely Planet Publications to become the world’s largest independent guidebook publisher with offices in London and Oakland as well as the head office in Melbourne.

Recently, Tony has been involved with the Planet Wheeler Foundation’s international development work and the California-based archaeological organisation Global Heritage Fund and will be joining us at this dinner to share his incredible story, along with insight gained through building a truly global business and travelling the world.
