European expansion: where to go and how to do it

UK founders and CEOs who have not yet crossed onto the continent may wonder whether they have missed the boat; but opportunities still abound.

Brexit may have deterred some from entering the EU, while others are setting up ventures to access local talent as well as customers. It’s easy to forget there are longstanding barriers to entry to Europe, and many scaleups have learned some expensive lessons from failed forays on the continent. Despite its proximity, Europe is culturally diverse with variance in local law and regulation.

Nonetheless, many markets within and outside the European Union offer lucrative growth potential. This roundtable will explore the risks and rewards of expanding across Europe, which countries offer the most favourable environment for growth, and the key questions to consider as you decide on your target market.

This dinner will seek to explore but will not be limited to:
  • Ease of set up, language, availability of senior talent, connectivity, corporation tax and salaries are all important considerations
  • Is it best to acquire a business, set up a new venture, or work with a partner?
  • Should you send someone over and which countries are best recruiting local talent?
  • Should you adapt your brand, and what are the most effective sales and marketing channels?
